New Chicago Sports Fans:

Every new resident of Chicago will soon find out the love and dedication that Chicago fans have for their sports teams.  Chicago is home to some of the most memorable championships and loveable sports teams.  Some of the greatest athletes in the world have represented the great city of Chicago.  Whether it was Michael Jordan scoring game-winning buzzer-beater jump-shots, or Walter Payton breaking tackles on the way to a Super-Bowl winning season.  Chicago sports fans take pride in their city and make it well-known what city they’re from.  Here is the list of professional sports teams in Chicago and a little bit about their history.

Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs is Chicago’s baseball team located on the North side of the city.  Although it’s been more than 100 years since the Cubbies’ have won a world series, they are considered to have the most loyal fans in all of baseball.  Nothing really beats a nice hot summer day at Wrigley Field.  The stadium has an older feel to it and really demonstrates the character of Chicago.  These “Loveable Losers” (as they have been called over the years due to their World Series drought) have had a rollercoaster of a history.  It looked as though they would make it to the World Series a few years ago until the infamous Bartman incident.

Wrigley Field is also home to many big musical events every summer.  The buildings across the street from the outfield offer seats on top of the buildings that look down over the field and are available for paying customers to watch the game from.  It seems as though no matter how many seasons it will take for the Cubs to win that next World Series, that the true Cubs fans of Chicago will always love their Cubbies.

Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls is arguably the basketball team with the most legendary team and player in the history of the game.  Michael Jordan is arguably the most successful and recognized athlete in sports history.  He alone changed the game forever.  His 6 championships, and 6 championship MVP titles have helped to solidify his name as being the greatest basketball player ever to play the game.

The Chicago Bulls play in the United Center, which is also home to the Chicago Blackhawks hockey team.  Since the Michael Jordan era the Chicago Bulls have struggled to regain their identity, but in 2008 the Bulls received the number one pick in the draft and picked up now superstar Derek Rose. Bulls fans are hoping that Derek Rose can help lead the Bulls to another championship.

Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears are another legendary Chicago team that has a huge fan-base throughout the country.  Chicago was the home for legendary Bears running back Walter Payton.  Walter Payton is one of the game’s all-time greatest and helped lead the Bears to a Super Bowl ring in 1985.  The Chicago Bears are known for being “The Monsters of Midway.”  They’re known for hard-nosed ground and pound football.  They’re also known for their gritty defense.  Over the years the offense has been inconsistent, but Bears fans know they can always count on the defense to keep them in games.

Soldier Field is home to the Bears and home to some of the wildest, and coldest winter games in the NFL.  With their trade for former Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler, the Bears are hoping to have found the franchise quarterback they need to move toward another Super Bowl run.  Another current mentionable Bears player is return specialist Devin Hester.  Hester just recently set the record for most kickoff/punt return touchdowns in NFL history.

Chicago Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks are currently the defending Stanley Cup champions.  The hawks had an unforgettable championship run last season and ended up beating the Philadelphia Flyers to win the Stanley Cup.  Although the Hawks had to get rid of some of the players from the championship team, the core players still remain and Blackhawks fans are hopeful for another great season from the team.  The Blackhawks play their games at the United Center, which is also home to the Chicago Bulls.  The Blackhawks have some of the best young talent in the league with players like Kane and Toews.

Chicago White Sox

The Chicago White Sox is the baseball team located on the South Side of the city.  They had an epic run to win the World Series in 2005 and look to make another run for the pennant next season.  The Sox have been consistent with their winning over the past few seasons and are always a dangerous team in the American League.

Just Trying to Make Your Move a Little Easier…

Packing is much more convenient, and less tiring when you have a good work area.  It is suggested that you clear the kitchen table and do your packing on the table.  Keep in mind that when you are packing fragile articles you should plan to pack the heaviest objects toward the bottom of the carton; more delicate articles should be packed closer to the top of the carton.  The first thin to do is lay out flat on the table a sizable stack of packing paper.  Select a sturdy, medium-sized carton.  Line the bottom of the carton with several layers of packing paper for additional cushioning.

Bekins’ professional packing services offer you convenience and peace of mind.  Our packers are trained in packing methods to alleviate any damage during transit.  We offer a full range of packing services from the complete packing of all items in your home, to partial packing services.  Or, you may want us to pack your fragile items like china, glassware, mirrors or artwork.

Whatever your packing needs, we can assist.  We know how important it is to you that your goods arrive at your new home safely and without damage.  The correct packing of your household goods will ensure that they remain safe during transit.

Whether you use Bekins’ packing services or if you decide to pack on your own, it is important to plan and organize.  Plan to pack only items that you will use in your new home.  Don’t pack items that you’ve been planning to get rid of-donate them to charity before you move.

Please be aware that your electronic equipment may require special preparation.  Be sure to detach all cords and wires and keep them in a labeled bag so that you know where they belong.  When moving computers, scanners or printers, be sure to detach cords and wires, paper trays, etc, and label all cables and wires for easy re-assembly.  Be sure to use well padded, sturdy cartons to cushion the equipment.  Mark these items “fragile”.  Large screen televisions will require extra padding and protection.  If possible, pack it in its original carton.  If these cartons are not available, consider crating the item prior to moving day.

When you pack your items, consider the floor plan of your new home so that you organize your items based on the rooms that they will be placed in upon delivery.  This will make the unpacking process more efficient.  And remember, dispose of any hazardous items such as cleaning supplies, solvents, paint, aerosol cans, flammables or ammunition.  They simply cannot be moved.

We also recommend that you don’t pack furs, jewelry, precious stones or metals, important personal documents, valuable collections, stocks and bonds or cash.  These special items are invaluable to you, so do not pack them for the truck, but be sure to take them with you.

Moving Unique or Bulky Items

You may own several bulky articles that you will need to move.  These are items such as automobiles, boats, trailers, lawn tractors, snowmobiles, play ground equipment, and all-terrain vehicles.  These items can be moved in ways that keep them from damaging other more fragile items.  The key to moving these items successfully is to secure them so they do not sway on their own suspension systems during transit.  Bekins utilizes both its own hauling fleet and partners with specialized automobile carriers to improve efficiency and ultimately save your money.

Be sure to have as little fuel as possible in these items and check them for any leaks prior to moving them.  In addition, boats should be drained of all oils and fuel to avoid any damage to your shipment.

Our Bekins drivers are trained and knowledgeable in how to “deck over” such items and will use special tools and strapping to hold these items in place.  Rest assured that Bekins will professionally and carefully secure your items in the van-even your bulky ones!

Blagojevich Auction

By SERENA DAI

A colorful inflatable bounce house, a smoking grill and two jumpsuit-wearing Elvis Presley impersonators. It wasn’t a carnival, but an auction of items connected to former Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

A life-sized statue of Elvis and a neon “Governor Blagojevich” sign were among the hot items auctioned off Thursday after Blagojevich’s campaign fund stopped paying for their storage.

A suburban Chicago storage facility evicted the statue, which was bought for $20,500, along with campaign buttons, banners, files and other material connected to Illinois’ latest convicted ex-governor. Other items sold were a $600 painting of Abraham Lincoln, a $120 plaque rewarding Blagojevich for political leadership and $1,650 framed autographed photo of Elvis.

“It was between Oprah and this,” said Shelley Shanson, 63, of Houston, who was visiting a friend in the Chicago area and wanted to see the Blagojevich auction for herself. “And this won out.”

The owner of Boyer-Rosene Moving & Storage said the seven wooden storage units holding the items hadn’t been paid for in more than a year. The items first began being stored at facility in Arlington Heights about eight years ago, or right around when Blagojevich was elected governor.

The company has said auction profits will go to Children’s Memorial Hospital.

A federal jury convicted Blagojevich on Tuesday on one count of lying to the FBI, but deadlocked on 23 counts. Federal prosecutors are expected to retry Blagojevich.

Telephone and e-mail messages left Thursday for Blagojevich publicist Glenn Selig and attorneys for the Friends of Blagojevich campaign fund were not returned.

Selig has said the units belong to Friends of Blagojevich, not the former governor, and that the fund’s finances are frozen as part of his legal case. He said Blagojevich has no idea what is in the units or whether anything there even belongs to him.

Thursday’s auction attracted several people looking for Elvis memorabilia, as Blagojevich was a known fan of the singer. Along with the statue and signed photo, cardboard cutouts of Elvis were on hand.

“The only good thing about him was that he was an Elvis fan,” said 72-year-old Helen Newsome of Algonquin.

Most of the auctioned goods weren’t so flashy. Furniture, boxes of files and unmarked videotapes took up most of the auction with a starting price of $25.

Anthony Jenkins, 48, of Chicago said he came because he considers the items part of history. Jenkins bought a box of unmarked videotapes.

“The final chapter has not been written,” Jenkins said. “I want to say I had some part in it.”
